Contraception from your pharmacy: the pill without a GP appointment

Through the NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service, you can start the contraceptive pill or get your next supply from a pharmacy, with no GP appointment needed. The consultation is free and confidential.

Who it's for

Anyone who wants to start the pill for the first time, or continue a pill they already take, including the combined pill and the progestogen-only pill.

What happens in the consultation

• About 20 minutes in our private consultation room.
• We'll ask about your health, any medicines you take and your family history.
• We'll check your blood pressure, and may ask your height and weight.
• If the pill is suitable for you, we supply it there and then, and send a note to your GP practice.

What to bring: a list of any medicines you take and, if you're continuing, your current pill packet.

Emergency contraception

If you've had unprotected sex or your contraception may have failed, act quickly. The sooner emergency contraception is taken, the more effective it is.

• Levonorgestrel (the "morning after pill") can be taken up to 72 hours (3 days) afterwards.
• Ulipristal acetate can be taken up to 120 hours (5 days) afterwards.
• A copper coil (IUD) is the most effective option and can be fitted up to 5 days afterwards by a GP or sexual health clinic.

Emergency contraception has been free from NHS pharmacies in England since October 2025, and we provide it at Kings Furlong with no appointment needed. Come in, or call 01256 460390, and we'll see you as quickly as we can.

Common questions

Is it confidential? Yes. Consultations are private, and we only share what's needed with your GP practice.

Can I get the pill if I've never taken it before? Yes. The service covers starting the pill as well as repeat supplies.

When are you open? Monday to Friday 9am–6pm and Saturday 9am–5pm. We're closed on Sundays.
