Free blood pressure checks for over-40s at S R Pharmacy

High blood pressure rarely causes symptoms. If you're 40 or over, a free NHS check at Kings Furlong takes about 15 minutes.

High blood pressure is one of the most common long-term health conditions in the UK, and most people who have it feel completely well. Left untreated, it raises the risk of heart attack and stroke. The only way to know your numbers is to have them measured.

Who can have a free check

If you're aged 40 or over, haven't been diagnosed with high blood pressure, aren't being treated for it and haven't had a check in the last five years, you can have a free NHS blood pressure check at S R Pharmacy. In some cases, such as a family history of high blood pressure, we can check people under 40 too.

What happens

  • Book a 15-minute slot online, or pop in and ask.
  • You'll sit quietly for a few minutes first, then we take your reading with a cuff on your upper arm.
  • We explain your result straight away and answer any questions.

Understanding your numbers

A reading has two numbers. The first (systolic) is the pressure when your heart beats; the second (diastolic) is the pressure between beats.

  • Ideal: between 90/60 and 120/80
  • High: 140/90 or higher when measured in a pharmacy or surgery

If your reading is raised, we may offer you ambulatory blood pressure monitoring: a small monitor you wear at home for 24 hours to get a fuller picture. We share the results with your GP practice. If your reading is very high, we'll advise you to get medical advice the same day.

Small changes that help

  • Cut down on salt
  • Stay active: aim for 150 minutes of moderate activity a week
  • Keep alcohol within the recommended limits
  • Stop smoking (we can talk you through the options)
  • Work towards a healthy weight

Common questions

How often should I be checked? The NHS advises adults over 40 to have their blood pressure checked at least every five years, and more often if a reading has been raised or you're at higher risk.

Do I need to prepare? Avoid caffeine, smoking and exercise for 30 minutes beforehand, and wear a top with sleeves you can roll up easily.

Can I just walk in? Yes, during opening hours (Monday to Friday 9am–6pm and Saturday 9am–5pm). Booking guarantees your slot.
