Just started a new medicine? We'll check in.
If your GP has just started you on a medicine for a long-term condition, such as asthma, type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure, the NHS New Medicine Service lets our pharmacist check how you're getting on over the first few weeks. It's free, and the follow-ups can be by phone.

New Medicine Service
A few short conversations. A medicine that works for you.
What's included
Support, while you settle in.
All free on the NHS. Ask when you collect your new medicine.
Getting started
A chat when you first collect the medicine about how and when to take it.
Follow-up
A check after a week or two on side effects, doses you might have missed and any worries.
Final check
A last conversation a couple of weeks later, and we let your GP know if anything needs looking at.
How it works
Three conversations, over a few weeks.
Collect your medicine
Ask about the New Medicine Service, or we'll offer it if you're eligible.
We check in
In the pharmacy or by phone, at a time that suits you.
Sorted, or referred
If something isn't right, we'll help or speak to your GP.
Good to know
Questions, answered.
Which medicines does it cover?
Medicines newly prescribed for certain long-term conditions, including asthma, COPD, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, epilepsy and stroke, people taking blood thinners, and depression for adults. Ask us and we'll check whether yours qualifies.
Does it cost anything?
No. The New Medicine Service is free on the NHS in England.
Do I have to come into the pharmacy?
No. After the first conversation, the follow-ups can be done over the phone if that's easier for you.
What if I get side effects?
Tell us at your check-in, or call us on 01256 460390 before then. We'll advise you and, if needed, contact your GP about changing the medicine or the dose.
Do I need to be referred?
No. If you're starting an eligible medicine, just ask us when you collect it. Your GP or a hospital may also suggest it.
Will my GP know?
Yes, where something needs their attention. We share any problems that need a change to your treatment with your GP practice.
